- A Snapshot provides a rollback point for recovery
- Snapshots can be taken at different levels - your entire VergeIO Cloud (VDC), a NAS volume, or a VM. Additionally, individual Tenants and VMs can be recovered from a Cloud Snapshot.
- Near-instant backup / recovery
- Snapshots leverage deduplication
- Snapshots can be scheduled and taken manually.
- Profiles provide schedules for automating snapshots and policy for the lifecycle of snapshots.
- Multiple default Profiles are included upon the installation of a VergeIO system.
- Profiles consist of one or more periods, each period defines a frequency for taking a snapshot and how long to keep those snapshots after they are taken.
- How—Tos:
- View Existing Profiles
- Create a new Snapshot Profile
- Assigning Snapshot Profiles is covered in specific sections (Cloud Snapshots, VM Snapshots)
- Cloud Snapshots provide protection of your entire system as they include everything.
- An individual Tenant Snapshot can be pulled from the Cloud Snapshot. A Tenant can be allowed to access their own Snapshot from the Provider’s Snapshots.
- Individual VMs can also be pulled from a Cloud snapshot.
- How—Tos:
- View Existing Cloud Snapshots
- Change the Profile used for Cloud Snapshots
- Take a manual Cloud Snapshot
- Restore an entire system from a Cloud Snapshot
- Restore an individual VM from a Cloud Snapshot
- Disaster Recovery — Site Sync can be used to send Cloud Snapshots to another VergeIO system for off-site backup, DR/Business Continuity
- Protection of a single Virtual Machine
- Typically, protecting VMs can be handled within Cloud Snapshots. However, individual Snapshots are available at the VM level as well for situations where a VM needs more frequent snapshots, longer retention of snapshots, etc.
- Manual snapshots can be taken immediately before making significant changes to the VM (e.g. guest OS update)
- How—Tos:
- Set a schedule (Snapshot Profile) for a VM’s individual Snapshots
- Take a manual VM Snapshot.
- View available Snapshots for a VM.
- Restore a VM from its Snapshot
- Overwrite existing
- Create a new VM instance with snapshot
- Your individual Tenants can be recovered from your Cloud Snapshot. Additionally, you, as the Provider, can allow Tenant to download their own snapshot data as needed.
- How—Tos:
- Restore one of your Tenants
- Push Snapshot down to your Tenant (from your Cloud Snapshot)
- Allow a Tenant to pull their own Snapshot from your(the provider) Snapshots.
- Tenant instructions to pull down their own Snapshot from your Cloud Snap.
- Tenant Instructions to restore their system from a Provider Cloud Snapshot
- Tenant Instructions to restore their own individual VMs from a Provider Cloud Snapshot
- Tenants can also create and maintain their own Snapshots/Snapshot schedules following the same Cloud Snapshot instructions (as the Provider) from their own VergeIO UI.
- NAS Snapshots covered in Module 6.
