A Snapshot captures the state of an entity at a particular point in time. Snapshots can be used to create a point-in-time capture of an entire VergeIO Cloud, Tenant, individual Virtual Machine, or a NAS volume. Snapshots allow "rolling back" to the state at the time of the Snapshot, which can be helpful for recovery, development, and testing purposes.
A Snapshot Profile defines a schedule for Snapshot creation and cleanup. A Snapshot Profile can contain multiple Profile Periods, allowing for various frequencies and retention levels.
A Profile Period defines a specific frequency (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly) for taking snapshots and how long to keep those snapshots (e.g. 12 hours, 3 days, 1 year, etc.). Multiple Profile Periods can be added to a single Snapshot Profile. Examples of profile periods: snapshots every 6 hours that are kept for 24 hours; daily snapshots kept for 3 days; a weekly snapshots kept for 6 months; etc.
A Manual Snapshot does not involve a Snapshot Profile. It can be taken on the fly, whenever there is a need, via the VergeIO UI or API. For example, right before performing a substantial guest OS update to a VM, an admin may choose to take a manual snapshot of the VM to provide a roll-back point if there are problems with the update.
A Cloud Snapshot provides a roll-back point for an entire VergeIO system; it includes everything within the cloud including configuration settings, networks, VMs, NAS instances, Tenants, etc. A Cloud Snapshot can be used to restore the entire system to a previous state, or individual components can be selected for restoration. For example, an individual Tenant can be restored or an individual VM can be extracted for restoration.
A VM Snapshot provides a backup instance for an individual VM.
