A NAS (Network Attached Storage) is file-level storage, accessible through a network. The VergeIO NAS Service provides file repository access to users / applications via CIFS and / or NFS shares. A VergeIO NAS can be used to store data within the VergeIO vSAN as well as mount external file systems.
A Volume is a directory structure within a VergeIO NAS. A VergeIO NAS can contain one or more Volumes, with each Volume allowing different settings for aspects such as security, snapshot, tiering, maximum size, antivirus settings, shares, etc.
Common Internet File System (CIFS) is a network file system protocol used for providing share access to files across a network. CIFS is an implementation of the SMB protocol created by Microsoft. CIFS can be used to create a Remote Volume in the NAS to mount an external file system. CIFS can also be used to share out Local Volumes that are stored within the VergeIO NAS.
Network File System (NFS) is a network file system protocol used for providing share access to files across the network. NFS is commonly supported and used in Linux operating systems. NFS can be used to create a Remote Volume in the NAS to mount an external file system. NFS can also be used to share out Local Volumes that are stored within the VergeIO NAS.
